Emerging Coaches Program Overview

The Australian Rugby Union Emerging Coaches Program (ECP) is designed to provide identified coaches operating within the Australian Rugby Union Participation & Performance Pathways with education, training and development specific to context in which they coach.

The ECP will run for a 12-month period with between 15-20 coaches. During which time all selected coaches will be required to attend a number of education seminars, attend a World Rugby Level 3 course, submit a number of assessments including one video-taped session for a critical evaluation.

The competitions and programs that the Australian Rugby Union are targeting through the Emerging Coaches Program. These include coaches who are coaching:

  • Premier Rugby
  • Colts Premier Rugby
  • Youth/Senior Sevens
  • Director of Rugby
  • Schoolboy representative
  • Regional Competitions
  • Women’s Rugby
  • Junior Gold Cup
  • Elite players transitioning from athlete to coach 

Program Structure

State Union:

  • State Union/Territory Advanced Coach Program (Two day linked to Super Franchise)
  • State Union Advanced Coach Seminars
  • JGC Workshops/T5 programs/development TID program coaching
  • Individual Action Plan

ARU Coach Development:

  • Analysis & Preparation World Rugby (Level 3) two day course ARU facilitated
  • Completion specified University of Queensland Learning Module
  • Invitation to ARU Coach Development camps (20s etc)
  • Submission of World Rugby course assessments 

Emerging Coach Program – Certification, Accreditation & Identification

  • On completion of your State Based Program you will receive a certification of attendance.
  • On completion of the allocated University of Queensland online module coaches will receive a certification of completion.
  • The World Rugby (Level 3) accreditation will be achieved by participants who attend the ‘Analysis & Preparation Course’ (two days) and successfully pass all required assessment tasks within the provided time frames. 
  • Further SU and ARU coach TID 

A course levy of A$1495 (GST incl.) per participant either from successful applicants or their club/school. The fee covers all costs of the program including, resources, videos, meals, facility hire fees, consultant and presenter fees, assessment and all course materials. Course Delivery

ECP offers a variety of blended learning including theory, practical,self-reflection, online learning and individual action plan. Modules will be delivered by content experts comprising of professional coaching staff from the ARU and State Union Development Pathways and High Performance Units, professional coaches from other sports, expert technicians from leading sport institutions and leading academic experts from Australia’s top Universities. 


Nomination Details

Coaches wishing to participant in the program must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently SmartRugby compliant
  • Possession of a current ARU Level 2 Coaching Accreditation or ARU approved RPL equivalency
  • Recent completion of professional coach development (e.g. attended an Advance Coach Seminar, relevant tertiary education)
  • Currently coaching in the Emerging Player, Performance programs or competitions (see below)
  • Currently coaching in either the schools, colts or regional representative pathways
  • Currently identified as a ‘coach of potential’ by State Union/Territory pathways staff
  • Potential to coach at the performance level, with an intent to keep coaching domestically for the next four year period
  • Willingness to commit to continual professional development beyond completion of this course.
  • Preparedness to assist in State Union Player Development Programs
  • Commitment to fulfilling a coach mentor role for future State Union coaches
