Reason you started refereeing?

I moved to Sydney in 2008 for a new job and took up refereeing because I wanted to be involved with the game, but didn’t think I’d have the time to play.  Ironically, I now spend much longer on referee training and preparation than was ever required for the very modest level at which I played.

Best on-field rugby highlights?

(I suppose it would be polite to say the games where I was refereed by several of my now colleagues on the National Squad?)

Actual highlight was my first (and only!) 1st grade start during a year in Canberra where I played for the Uni-Norths Owls.  As a referee, I’m hoping the best moments are ahead of me.

Best off-field rugby highlights?

Meeting the Queensland team while selling raffle tickets at the Ballymore entrance in the early 90s.  They didn’t buy any tickets, but were very nice about it.

Occupation and interests outside of rugby?

I work as a lawyer in the construction industry.  In both work and rugby I prefer to focus on the ‘vibe’ rather than the letter of the law!

Otherwise, I’m spending as much time as possible with my baby daughter.  In the off season, my wife and I love getting back to our respective home states of South Australia and Queensland.

Best refereeing advice you’ve been given?

Advice from the many referee coaches who have emphasized that applying the law is a necessary but small part of what we do; equally important is the way in which we communicate with players and seek to understand what they are trying to achieve during the game.
