Over the past couple of months, the ARU has been delivering a presentation to referee associations across Australia focussing on “Empathy” and “Change Behaviour”, two of the four major elements of the ARU Referee profile.
This presentation has been pieced together through the second half of 2013 with the assistance of Steve Walsh, Angus Gardner and Andrew Cole, and revolves around several major themes:
- making decisions with relevance to the game in front of you
- talking to players in a manner that you would want to be spoken to
- influencing the game and players’ behaviour without the referee making himself the centre of attention
The Australian online referee coaching system, RRIMS, has been updated to be structured along the line of the ARU Referee Profile and it is crucial that all referees are on the same page with the direction that we are heading. The presentation has a lot of video examples of verbal comms, body language, escalation interactions, etc, which will hopefully assist in highlighting the points being made more clearly.
The presentation has been or is due to be delivered in the following places:
Adelaide: Sunday 23rd February
Perth: Saturday 8th March
Brisbane: Wednesday 12th March
Newcastle: Tuesday 18th March
