The National Youth 7’s Championships were held at McGilvray Oval in WA over the weekend and it was the first time a State Referees Association had the opportunity to support the whole event.

ARU Referees Manager Scott Young saw this as an important development opportunity for an association on the rise.

“WA Referees have worked hard to establish themselves in the Australian rugby referees landscape and this appointment is a credit to the hard work the committee, coaches and referees have put in”.

Scott Young and Amy Perrett of the ARU flew over for weekend to provide coaching as well as being on the lookout for new talent.

“We were very pleased with what we saw over the weekend. The professionalism showed by the referees and their willingness to learn and get better with every game was fantastic”. Perrett Said

“We have been able to identify a number of talented referees that we hope will continue down the referee pathway”.

One of those referees is current Wallaroo, Maddy Putz-Skiba.

The ex-player pathway is proving to be a strong route to the top with Nic Berry and Damon Murphy recently selected for tests in the November window and the HSBC World series, respectively.

“It is great to see one of our leading female players plying her trade as a referee and giving back to the game”. Young said.

Maddy will hope to make the Wallaroos team that will go to the World Cup next year in Ireland.

Apart from identifying new talent it, it was important to see current ARU National referees team members leading the way for their Association. Tyler Miller and Graham Cooper refereeing the Girls and Boys finals respectively.

These appointments came off the back of a very successful year for the pair, with Cooper involved in the JWC and NRC semi-final, and Miller refereeing her first National Championship Cup final a few weeks earlier at the Senior National 7’s in Adelaide. These strong performances have given her an opportunity to referee at the NZRU National 7’s Championships in Rotoura in January 2017.

With what was a successful weekend it won’t be long until we see more referees from WA moving onto bigger and better things.
