Australia has always produced strong 7s referees and the new crop is no exception. Jordan Way (22) is one of 15 new referees on the HSBC World Series Sevens in season 2016-17. In only his 5th tournament at the weekend, Jordan took charge of the history making Cup Final of the Singapore 7s.
“To have it as Canada v USA, they were the two form teams of the tournament. To have them [Canada] beat the bigger brothers obviously naturally gave it some real occasion. The game itself just flowed, everyone was out to win. It was one of the most enjoyable 7s games you’ve been involved in.”
The game was the first all North American Cup Final on the World Series with Canada taking out a win over their southern rivals the USA.
“The only difference is the anthems, otherwise you treat it as any other game so as to not get caught up in the occasion. Nothing else changed. It wasn’t until after the game, when you blow full time, when you see the players reaction that’s when it hits that this is something special. A pretty cool moment to be involved with. That was when the significance of the game hit.”
Way has to date done 6 tournaments of the HSBC World Series Sevens. A total of 27 games, 4 quarter finals, 2 semi finals and the one Cup Final. Not a bad resume for someone in their early twenties. He is enjoying his time on the World Series and everything that comes with it.
“It’s different. It’s nothing like I would have expected. I expected it to be serious 100% of the time, no time for play, there for the job 24/7 for the full week of a tournament.”
“It is professional but then also relaxed… When it is time to be serious and go time it’s serious, but then when time to relax we are encouraged to go and have some down time, appreciate where we are and get to know the rest of the referee team on a personal level.”
Jordan is also joined by fellow Australian Damon Murphy (33) on the HSBC World Series Sevens panel in season 2016-17. Damon is also enjoying a rapid rise through the refereeing ranks having only taken up the whistle 12 months ago after playing 7s of Australia
When asked if this was the first final of many… “That’s the goal. 100% would love to do plenty more.”
